Eco Friendly Charities
Here are some charities I've researched that do make a good positive difference without squirreling away tons of money for their CEOs or otherwise ripping off the people who give them donations. To look into them I used Charity Navigator, some Ecosia searches, and the info they provided on their websites.
- Arbor Day Foundation This is the organization that is planting all the trees thanks to #TeamTrees. I've bought trees directly from them before for my garden and not only were they cheap, but they thrived. You can become a member for $10 and they'll either plant ten trees with that donation or send you ten trees. You can also calculate your carbon footprint on their website and with that, give them a donation that offsets your footprint; they'll plant trees for you.
- National Park Service Not every country has a National Park Service, and ours does a good job. They'll put your donations to good use.
- Natural Resources Defense Council Works to change government policy to protect the environment and to enact legal policies and change laws for that purpose
- Earthjustice Specifically fights legal cases on behalf of the Earth. They defend clients free of charge, according to their website, so if you're dealing with environmental disaster, contact them.
- Living Lands and Waters River cleanup charity
- Non-GMO Project Despite the claims that Monsanto, Syngenta and ConAgra are really out for our best interests, the side effects of the pesticides that their crops are engineered to handle, the widespread death of pollinators, the predatory legal and political practices of these corporations, and the degradation of the land used to grow said GMO crops says otherwise. This project works to label everything in the US that is truly non-GMO with something verifying that it truly is.
- Mata Amritanandamayi Centers This is all of the stuff overseen by the guru known as Amma. Go get a hug from her and you'll know why I put this in here. A lot of the work is done in India and on the West Coast so a lot of people don't know about it but this is a good initiative.
- Ecosia This is a search engine that plants trees from their ad revenue. I use them instead of Google. You can also donate directly to them by "buying" trees that they then plant
- Winona LaDuke's Hemp Farm Hemp is the future.
- Dig Deep This is a charity that delivers clean water to people in rural areas who do not have it, mostly on Native American reservations. What's this doing in here? Human rights are intertwined with the health of the planet. You can't separate them.
