Handyman Stuff
Tips and Tricks
- Whenever you need to figure out how to fix or replace something, look up the exact make and model either on the internet or in a library. Usually the internet works better. Then, find both the installation manual and the operation manual and read them. Then you'll know if you're up to the task of fixing or replacing it yourself or if you need to hire an expert.
- Generally speaking it's far better to learn to love learning how to properly care for, babying, upgrading, and maintaining your home or apartment before anything becomes a major fucking problem. Therefore it's a good idea to get in the habit of looking up how to fix and maintain things correctly, and then fixing or maintaining things, ASAP. This is because until you get more experience it generally takes 3-5x as long as you originally expect to complete an involved handyman project because you don't know what you don't know.
- Learn about the problem as well and as carefully as you can before you decide to try and fix it because fixing a fuckup is even worse than the original problem in most cases. For infamous examples of this watch Canada's Worst Handyman or visit DiWHY.
Books, section created 9/24/23
- The entire Taunton Building series of books is great. Lacking in physics so do the statics calculations yourself if you know how, learn about the materials and the conditions at the site so you don't get unpleasant surprises, and for anything really involved get a civil engineer to take a thorough look at the blueprints and construction plans.
