Beauty, Hygiene, and Body Care
BEAUTY
- Fenty Beauty This is Rihanna's brainchild. I haven't tried it yet but apparently it is fabulous no matter what your skin color is, and after some misadventures with foundation in my younger years - it never ever ever ever matches for some reason?! - I think that's a pretty big deal.
- Indigenous Cosmetics Haven't yet tried these. Hopefully soon.
- CO Bigelow Super fancy stuff. Of note: Kevyn Aucoin branded cosmetics, seasonal fragrances.
- No-Miss Nail polish. It says it's "quick drying" which is a brazen lie, you'll be sitting there for a good hour and a half before it's finally done. But it's the least likely to cause problems due to chemicals in there. Therefore if you also have health problems, it's better than most of the other options.
- River Soap Great scents, gentle on skin, does a good job as soap as in it lathers up and cleans well.
- Bison Star Naturals An excellent company! Has lotion and other body care products with the aroma of some of my favorite places in the wilderness. Ahhh, makes me feel right at home. Hydro Lotion is unscented and has very clean ingredients. It might just be a good all-purpose face and body lotion, even helpful for massage. Will try. 10/17/22 Have tried. Unfortunately with fibromyalgia, I can't cope with even this lotion. Only Pacifica Coconut Probiotic Water Rehab Cream works for me in terms of not having bad reactions to lotion. But if you don't have such issues the hydro lotion might work great for you.
- Dr. Bronner's Products of note: plain bar soap, liquid soap (best mop bucket soap ever), Sal Suds
- Kokua Suncare Shelling out an arm and a leg for sunscreen, but this is the highest quality waterproof stuff on the market and it can stay on when you're swimming too.
- Pacifica Beauty Their makeup and skincare line is a vegan alternative to other companies. Their scented candles are good, and their perfumes are pretty good. Do note that these perfumes are synthetic, so if you have sensitivities there, avoid them. Ten or so years ago this company went way into the greenwashing "all natural" approach, claiming their perfumes weren't synthetic at all, etc. and they toned it down a bit since then. Shady. But their products are still "cleaner" than most.
- Badger Balm Excellent reef-safe sunscreen, lip balm, and other products. Buy it online because the stuff in stores has been sitting there for too long since it's expensive. Ironically, the online store is fairly affordable.
- 100 Percent Pure Makeup made of nontoxic ingredients.
- Manic Panic Vegan makeup in various colors. Likely not good for you and also won't stay on. A thoroughly mediocre product, but the only one in the market in those particular colors.
- Funkyshop Special Effects hair dye, also Sun's Eye oils. Haven't tried either myself. Like all other hair dye, bad for you. LOL
- Giovanni Cosmetics Shampoo, conditioner, and hair care products that won't harm the environment.
- The Amma Shop In all my years on this planet nothing this organization has done has ever let me down. Generally speaking you'll probably get what you pay for.
- Liberty Natural Products The most ethical essential oil company I could find
- Freyja's Magic Aftershave, skin care, aromatherapy, that kind of thing
- Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Perfumes These are good, original, the real deal. But like all perfume, in that you're pretty guaranteed to love some and not love others.
- Body Fantasies Perfumes These are surprisingly good for the price, like the Juice Bar stuff from the 90s.
- Fragrantica No idea what perfume to try next? Float around on here for a while and see what you find. Incidentally the site also has some pretty cool suggestions in the forum for things like nail polish, lingerie, bath and body products. Here's Basenotes too, which is a rival forum.
- Kuumba Made Despite my serious annoyance that they're trying to greenwash this as "natural" (snort), see if you like the Egyptian Musk. There really is nothing like it.
- MoonDancer Perfume oils and incense sticks. Possibly good, possibly not.
- Gracie Jay And Co Added 11/19/23. New small business online selling various kinds of makeup and nail polish. Interesting. Haven't shopped there yet.
HAIR STUFF
- Pacifica Beauty Highly, highly recommended.
- Wahl Mostly hair clippers and grooming products. Haven't tried these yet.
- Arctic Fox Hair Color If you want to dye it and have it a bright color, this is the stuff. No, it's not good for you at all. Can potentially cause cancer and heaven knows what else. It does look great. Bleach it first y'all.
HYGIENE
- Natracare Organic pads and tampons. You can only get them through vendor middlemen though, most notably Natural Grocers and Sprouts.
- Natracare moist towelettes These biodegrade, meaning they are (theoretically) septic tank safe. And definitely flushable.
- Diva Cup Some women have a good experience with these.
