Clothing, Fashion and Apparel
- After much research I have come to a conclusion about fashion that I do not like. There are no affordable clothing stores that are guaranteed free of sweatshops and slave labor. Unless you are willing to shell out double, triple, or ten times the price, your best bet is probably to get it secondhand. Or to sew it yourself.
- Fox Sox 5/29/23 Affordably priced socks mostly manufactured in the US for very active people - soldiers, hikers, people on their feet all day. Might be worth it, I'll certainly get some myself and let you know how they are.
- Eleven by Venus Williams Have not yet tried this brand. It's interesting for sure.
- Hand-knit acrylic/wool socks from Ukraine
- Goodwill I recommend shopping in the 99 cents shipping category. When I last bought some fantastic clothes from here they turned out to be twice the price since Goodwill decided using Fedex instead of USPS was somehow a good idea, springing a 2x charge on me after bidding was over. For a thrift store this is not a brilliant idea but they did it and it doesn't look like they've changed that. Therefore stick to the cheap shipping and you should be ok.
- Swap This might be a decent place to get clothing. I don't know.
- Hanes Fast fashion? Probably unethical? This used to be the case for this company. It seems they're trying to do better.
- Champion A subsidiary of Hanes.
- Wrangler Unknown corporate ethics, seems okay. I hope. Highly recommended for all work wear, and for everyday wear, since these jeans and clothing items do not wear out for years and years. All of the items made for men can also be worn on women and they work just fine.
- Cuddl Duds Don't know about how ethical this is, or not.
- Macy's Diverse Owned Brands This is neat. Macy's is now trying to offer stuff specifically by minority owned businesses. I say it's neat because thanks to the secret ingredient of RaCiSM you usually can't find products from minority-owned businesses anywhere. Which decreases overall merit in the marketplace.
- Patagonia Worn Wear Unlike the main store, where everyone I know doesn't have a prayer of affording anything, this is used Patagonia gear and it is both affordable and quite high quality. Also, Patagonia products are pretty darned good.
- Onno Bamboo fiber, organic cotton, and hemp clothing. About twice to four times the price of more commonly available t-shirts, like $40 a shirt
- Boody Bamboo fiber undergarments. Surprisingly, about the same price as the non-bamboo stuff.
- Beyond Buckskin Native American clothing and apparel. Changes all the time, you never know what you'll find on this site.
- B.Yellowtail Also Native American clothing and apparel but more along the haute couture end of things. Changes all the time.
- Sweetwater Dreams Native-made beaded headbands and necklaces
Maggies Organics They sell socks. They aren't made of wool but they claim they are. At most it's a blend of tiny amounts of wool with mostly synthetics. Whyyy
- Eighth Generation socks Not wool but they are cool.
- Green Tree Weaving Hand-woven stuff. It has its own aesthetic.
- Union House Apparel Clothing, games, cookware and other stuff made in the USA
- Carhartt Durable stuff that's warm and relatively weatherproof.
- Johnson Woolen Mills Woolens.
- Big Boy Bamboo Large bamboo cloth shirts for large men. Yes, that is their marketing strategy.
- Pendleton Blankets Featuring Native Artists' Work Pendleton blankets. Apparently these are often a gift given at powwows and events in American NDN culture. They're pretty great blankets.
- Etsy One of the things Etsy excels at is clothes. Browse and you might find some really good stuff.
- Bates Boots and shoes normally sold to the military and to law enforcement.
- Tippy Thai An Etsy shop selling handmade purses
