Adulting
People roughly ages 17 to 26 could probably really benefit from this information. I added it because when I was that age, things uh, didn't go so well for me. I left the nest when I became of age and then it was all downhill from there because I had basically no guidance. Boomers either laughed at me when I floundered or sneered at me when I asked for help, and were like "LOL this is the best time of your life, have fun." Spoilers: I did not have fun. Read this section, my pain is your gain.
Ideas - section added 11/18/24
- No one parent can do it all when it comes to preparing a child for adulthood. A lot of younguns graduate high school or even college with no real idea of how to cope with everyday life as an adult. You can see this everywhere, and this is regardless of any intentions of the school or the parents. Now I don't have all the answers here, and I'm not going to get into the argument of the ethics of using K-12 school and college to fill in the job where a parent should have done the job. But consider this: everyone mature enough to understand that life is complicated and difficult when you have to handle all the things yourself can probably see the logic behind learning all of the things you think you could have and should have learned from your parents and/or teachers, but didn't. And there's scads of this stuff. Cooking, cleaning, and holding down a job are not even close to all the things you gotta know. What's ethics? What's logic? Right and wrong? Which religion? How to communicate without being misunderstood? How to make your life good? Etc. All I can say is that more education for yourself here is never a bad thing
Books
- 4/21/23 Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies by Tara Schuster - as of now I'm one chapter in and still recommend it, even just for the first chapter. Don't know what's in the rest of the book yet. It's the textbook on adulting I wish I had.
- The Everygirl's Guide to Life by Maria Menounos
- Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown - caveat: a lot of it is subjective advice, especially the parts about not believing yourself to be unique and the manners/courtesy section which is from the standpoint of Midwestern white culture
NATO Phonetic Alphabet and its numbers Helpful for spelling out names and numbers over the phone, especially when you're doing something important. Practice with your name and date of birth.
